Ask the internet whether to buy a mesh kit and you'll get two loud camps. One says mesh solved their whole house in an afternoon. The other says mesh is a gimmick and real networks use wires. Both camps are describing their own house, and houses differ.
We install both. Here's how we actually decide, and how you can decide for yourself.
What mesh really is
A mesh kit is a set of access points that talk to each other over Wi-Fi. One unit connects to your modem; the others relay traffic wirelessly back to it. The appeal is obvious: plug in three units, run an app, done. No drilling, no cable.
The catch is in the word "relay." Every hop between units spends airtime and signal. A device connected to a far satellite has its traffic carried over the same crowded radio spectrum that everything else is using, through the same walls that created your dead zone in the first place. Good mesh systems mitigate this with a dedicated radio for the backhaul link, and it helps, but the physics doesn't go away.
Where mesh genuinely works
Plenty of places, honestly:
A newer house with wood-frame walls and an open layout. A long bungalow where the router sits at one end. A rented home where drilling isn't an option. A household whose demands are streaming, browsing and video calls rather than anything latency-sensitive.
In those cases a decent mesh kit, with units placed thoughtfully (each satellite within strong range of the previous one, not parked in the dead zone it's meant to fix), delivers a real improvement for a few hundred dollars and an hour of effort. We tell people this plainly. Not every house needs an installer.
If you're going the mesh route, one tip matters more than any product choice: placement. A satellite receiving a weak signal can only rebroadcast a weak connection. Halfway between the router and the problem area beats "in the problem area" every time.
Where mesh runs out of road
Certain houses defeat wireless backhaul no matter the brand:
Older brick and plaster construction, additions with unexpected masonry between them, in-floor heating, large footprints over multiple storeys, or a detached garage or shop across the yard. Signal that can't get through walls can't relay through them either.
Then there's load. A family of streamers plus a home office plus a stack of smart devices puts sustained pressure on the backhaul. And if you're adding Wi-Fi cameras, understand that each one uploads video continuously; a few of them on a mesh satellite can eat the very capacity your laptops needed. Cameras are the single most common reason we convert mesh homes to wired.
Finally, symptoms: if your mesh network "works" but video calls stutter when someone else streams, or devices cling to the wrong node, you've likely hit the ceiling of what relaying can do in your building.
What wired access points buy you
A wired access point is the same idea as a mesh satellite with one difference: its connection back to the router is a cable, not a radio. That difference is everything. Every AP delivers full performance regardless of walls, distance or what the other APs are doing. Coverage becomes a matter of putting a unit wherever you want one, including the garage, the shop, or the far end of a century farmhouse.
The cost is the cabling. In an unfinished basement or accessible attic, runs are straightforward and a typical two-or-three drop job is done in half a day. In a finished two-storey with no chases, it takes more creativity, though there's nearly always a route. Once the cable is in, it's in for decades, and it will outlive several generations of whatever hardware hangs off it. How to choose
A short honest test:
If your house is wood-frame, modest in size, and your problems are "weak signal in a couple of rooms," try mesh first. Worst case, the units resell easily.
If your house has hostile construction, spans a big footprint, includes outbuildings, or will carry cameras and a busy household, budget for cable and wired APs. You'll spend more up front and never think about it again.
