Wi-Fi site surveys and heat maps

Before we put a single access point on the wall, we measure. A survey shows where your Wi-Fi actually reaches, where it fails, and why, so the fix is designed rather than guessed.

Most Wi-Fi problems are not solved by a more expensive router. They are solved by putting the right number of access points in the right places, on the right channels, at the right power. A site survey is how we find those places. We walk the property with survey tools, record signal strength, noise and throughput room by room, and produce a heat map that shows coverage as it is today and as it will be after the work.

For an existing network we also look at what is interfering: neighbouring networks, microwave ovens, cordless phones, metal ductwork, foil-backed insulation, stone walls and aquariums are all regulars. For a new build or renovation we do a predictive survey from the floor plan so the cabling for access points goes in before the drywall does.

The deliverable is a short report you can understand: the heat map, the recommended access-point locations and count, the cabling required, and a quote. If your existing gear is fine and only needs moving or reconfiguring, the report says so.

What's included

  • On-site measurementSignal, noise, throughput and roaming tested in every room and outdoor area you care about, on the devices you actually use.
  • Heat map reportBefore-and-after coverage maps, interference findings and a plain-English summary.
  • Placement planAccess-point count and locations, mounting details and the cable drops each one needs.
  • Predictive surveysFor new builds and fit-outs, from drawings, so cabling goes in at the right stage.
  • Fix-it quoteEquipment listed by name, with options if there is more than one sensible answer.

Common questions

How long does a Wi-Fi survey take?

A typical house or small office takes one to two hours on site. Larger buildings, warehouses and multi-floor offices take longer, and we will give you an estimate once we know the square footage.

Do I need a survey if I am buying UniFi?

UniFi hardware is excellent, but placement still decides whether it works. A survey is how we make sure you buy the right number of access points and no more. For small homes we can often combine the survey with the install visit.

Can you survey a building that is not finished yet?

Yes. A predictive survey uses the floor plan and construction materials to model coverage, so we can specify cable drops for access points before the walls are closed.
