Wi-Fi 7 for normal people: what actually matters

What Wi-Fi 7 and MLO actually change in a real house, when upgrading is pointless, and why your devices will lag behind for years.

Wi-Fi 7 gear has been on shelves for a while now, and the marketing has settled into a familiar groove: enormous speed numbers, a new acronym or two, and the implication that your current router is embarrassing you. We install wireless networks for a living, so here is the version of the Wi-Fi 7 story we give friends and clients when they ask whether it is time.

Short version: it is a genuinely good standard, and most people should still not rush out to buy it.

MLO, without the whitepaper

The headline feature of Wi-Fi 7 is Multi-Link Operation, or MLO. Every earlier Wi-Fi generation had your phone talking to the router on one frequency band at a time: 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, or 6 GHz, pick one. MLO lets a device use more than one band at once for the same connection.

The plain-language benefit is not really the added speed, although that is what gets advertised. It is steadiness. If one band gets congested or hits interference, traffic shifts to the other band without the connection hiccupping. Think of it as driving a route with two lanes always available instead of one, so a stalled car doesn't stop you. For video calls and gaming, that smoothness is worth more than any peak-speed number.

The other real improvements are wider channels on the 6 GHz band and better behaviour in congested airspace. All good things. None of them life-changing in a detached house in Norfolk County with two neighbours in Wi-Fi range.

The speeds are real, the bottleneck isn't Wi-Fi

The multi-gigabit numbers on Wi-Fi 7 boxes are lab numbers, but even the real-world results are quick: it is not unusual to see well over a gigabit to a single close-range device.

Here is the thing. Most internet plans around here are in the hundreds of megabits to low gigabits. Most of what a household does (streaming, browsing, calls, backups) was not limited by Wi-Fi 6 either. If your internet feels slow today, the odds are good the cause is something else entirely, and we wrote a whole piece on telling those apart: is it slow internet or slow Wi-Fi. A Wi-Fi 7 router will not fix an undersized internet plan, a bad cable, or an access point in the wrong place.

Coverage deserves its own sentence: Wi-Fi 7 does not meaningfully change how far a signal travels through walls. A dead spot on Wi-Fi 6 will be a dead spot on Wi-Fi 7.

Your devices are the lag, and that's normal

A Wi-Fi 7 router can only speak Wi-Fi 7 to devices that also support it. As of mid-2026, that means recent flagship phones, some premium laptops, and not much else. The laptop you bought three years ago, the TV, the printer, the thermostat, the robot vacuum: all of them will connect at whatever standard they shipped with, and they always will.

This is how every Wi-Fi generation goes. Routers arrive first, and the client devices trickle in over five or more years as things get replaced. Buying a Wi-Fi 7 router today mostly means buying headroom that your device fleet will slowly grow into, which is a fine thing to do knowingly and a silly thing to do expecting an overnight transformation.

When upgrading actually makes sense

There are good reasons to land on Wi-Fi 7 gear. You are buying new equipment anyway because your old router is failing or ancient, and the price gap has narrowed enough that buying the older standard saves little. You have a multi-gigabit internet plan and devices that can use it. You have a dense, busy household where MLO's stability genuinely helps. You are wiring a new house and want the access points to last a decade.

And there are the pointless cases: replacing a healthy Wi-Fi 6 setup to make old devices faster (it won't), or trying to fix coverage problems that are really placement and wiring problems.
