Every January we get a wave of calls that start the same way: "We bought a new router over the holidays and the Wi-Fi is still terrible in the back bedroom." The box promised more speed, more range, more antennas. The dead spots didn't move an inch.
That's not because the router is bad. It's because the router was rarely the problem in the first place.
What a new router actually changes
A router does a few jobs: it talks to your internet provider, hands out addresses to your devices, and (in most homes) broadcasts Wi-Fi from wherever it happens to sit. A newer model can improve the radio, handle more devices at once, and support newer Wi-Fi standards.
What it cannot do is change physics. If the old router couldn't push a signal through two floors, a chimney and a tiled bathroom, the new one won't either. Radio waves lose strength with every wall, and brick, concrete, in-floor heating and metal ductwork eat signal faster than drywall. A stronger router in the same bad location is still a router in a bad location.
The usual suspects
When we survey a house with "bad Wi-Fi," the cause is almost always one of these, and usually more than one:
Placement. The router lives in a basement corner beside the electrical panel, because that's where the internet enters the house. Wi-Fi radiates outward like light from a bulb. Put the bulb in a basement closet and the far corners of the house sit in shadow.
One box covering too much house. A single access point, no matter how expensive, has a coverage limit. A 2,500 square foot two-storey with a finished basement is three coverage zones, not one. No single-router product covers that well.
Old cabling and old modems. We still find homes where the provider's line, the splitters, or an ancient modem cap the whole connection well below the plan speed. A new router downstream of a bad feed just distributes the same slow connection more stylishly.
The plan itself. If four people are streaming on a lower-tier plan, the bottleneck is the subscription, not the hardware. Worth ruling out before spending anything.
When a new router is the right answer
Sometimes it genuinely is. If your router is more than five or six years old, drops connections, needs weekly reboots, or chokes when the whole family is home, replacement makes sense. Older units also stop receiving security updates, which is reason enough on its own.
A new router is also the right move when your internet plan outruns your hardware. If you upgraded to a faster tier and your old router tops out below it, you're paying for speed you can't use.
The mistake is buying a new router to fix coverage. Speed problems at the router, yes. Signal problems in far rooms, almost never.
When access points and cabling are the answer
Coverage problems are solved by putting radios where people are, not by making one radio shout louder. That means access points: small ceiling or wall units, ideally fed by an Ethernet cable back to a central point. One on each floor of a typical house transforms the experience in a way no single router can.
The honest catch is that the best version involves running cable, which is why people avoid it. But a couple of cable runs is usually a half-day job, it's done once, and it outlasts every router you'll ever own. In a house that's hostile to Wi-Fi (older brick construction, additions, long ranch layouts), it's the only fix that actually holds.

A quick self-check before you spend money
Stand in the worst room with your phone. If you show full Wi-Fi bars but pages crawl, your problem is likely speed: the plan, the modem, or an overloaded router. If your bars are down to one or two, your problem is coverage, and no router swap will save you.
Then run a speed test standing beside the router. If it's fast there and slow far away, that's coverage again. If it's slow everywhere, look at the modem, cabling and plan first.
Ten minutes of checking beats another few hundred dollars on a box that solves the wrong problem.
