The second location is where most small business networks stop making sense.
Site one grew organically over a few years. Site two got whatever the contractor had on the shelf the week the lease started. Now there are two Wi-Fi passwords, two camera apps, two router logins, and when a staff member says "the internet was down yesterday" nobody can say which building, for how long, or why.
We see this constantly: a shop in Simcoe and a warehouse in Brantford, or a main office in Hamilton with a satellite in Norfolk. The fix is not more gear. It is putting both sites under one management layer so one person can actually see them.
What Site Manager gives you for free
UniFi's Site Manager (unifi.ui.com) is the piece a lot of owners do not realise they already have. Every UniFi console you own, or have been given admin access to, shows up there automatically. There is no licence and no per-site fee.
Three things it does that matter day to day.
Update Manager lets you push firmware and application updates to both sites from one screen instead of remoting into each console separately. ISP Viewer tracks latency, packet loss and uptime per site, so "the internet was down yesterday" becomes a chart with a timestamp on it. Admin management lets you hand a manager read-only access to their own building without giving them the keys to the whole company.
That last one is worth more than it sounds. Most of the multi-site messes we clean up started with one personal Ubiquiti account owning everything, and that account belonging to someone who left.
Fabrics, for when the same people work at both sites
Fabrics is the newer layer on top of Site Manager. It puts multiple sites into a shared trust domain so people and identity are managed once rather than per building.
In practice that means one staff account gets Wi-Fi, VPN and door access at whichever location they walk into, and offboarding someone is one action instead of four. If you already run Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace, you can bind an external identity provider so the network follows the same accounts your email does.
The requirements are worth checking before you get excited. Fabrics needs UniFi OS 4.4 or newer, and identity provider binding needs at least one qualifying console in the fabric (the Dream Machine Pro family, the Enterprise Fortress and Campus gateways, UCG-Fiber, or a UNVR Pro / ENVR). A fabric also supports a single identity provider today, which is fine for one company across several buildings and awkward if you were hoping to run unrelated clients under one roof.
Joining the two networks together
Seeing both sites is not the same as connecting them. If staff at the warehouse need the server at the shop, or you want cameras from both buildings in one recording view, the sites need a tunnel between them.
With UniFi gateways at both ends, Site Magic builds that site-to-site VPN from the Site Manager interface rather than from hand-written config on each router. It is one of the few genuinely easy parts of multi-site networking, and it only works if both ends are UniFi gateways. A third-party router at the second site will not appear in Site Manager at all, which is usually what forces the standardisation decision.
What to watch out for
Internet quality at the second site is almost always the weak link, especially outside town. A tunnel is only as good as the connection under it, and rural DSL or a congested cable line will make the whole thing feel broken even when the gear is fine. Updates are the other trap. Being able to update both sites from one button also means being able to break both sites from one button. We stage updates rather than clicking everything at once, for the reasons in how we handle UniFi updates.
And remote access performance varies. Site Manager will connect directly to your console when it can, which needs a public IP and TCP 443 free on the gateway, and falls back to a cloud relay when it cannot. If your second site sits behind carrier-grade NAT, expect the remote console to feel slower.
What we recommend
Standardise the gateway at both sites before anything else. One UniFi console per building, both on the same Ubiquiti account owned by the business rather than by a person, with staff added as admins underneath.
If site one is already UniFi and site two is a mixed bag, our network audit is $495 and produces a written plan for what to keep, what to replace and in what order. New builds and fit-ups are usually better handled as an office network setup from the start.
Technician labour is $135/hr locally and $150/hr on the Hamilton, Burlington and Oakville side. Visits 31 to 60 minutes out start at $395 and 60 minutes or more start at $595, which is a visit minimum the day's work counts toward rather than a surcharge on top. There is no minimum close to home in our Norfolk service area. Everything is quoted in writing before we start.
