Smart lighting is the one piece of home automation people actually use every day. Cameras get checked when something happens. Sensors sit there being sensors. Lights get touched a dozen times a day by everyone in the house, including guests and kids and the person who does not care about any of this.
That is why we are fussy about it, and why most of the smart lighting work we do in Ontario homes is Lutron.
The radio matters more than the app
Most inexpensive smart switches are Wi-Fi devices. Every switch becomes another client on your network, another thing to re-onboard when you change routers, and another device that stops responding when the Wi-Fi has a bad afternoon.
Lutron uses its own radio, Clear Connect, and the hub connects to your router by ethernet rather than Wi-Fi. Lutron's own documentation is direct about the consequence: the system still works locally even when your internet is down. Nothing about turning on a kitchen light should depend on a data centre, and with this gear it does not.
From an install standpoint, this also means a lighting system does not load up the wireless network we just built for you.
No neutral wire, which is the whole ballgame in older homes
Open a switch box in a house built before the 1980s around here and there is a good chance you will find no neutral conductor. Most smart switches need one. That is where a lot of smart lighting projects quietly die, or turn into an electrical job nobody budgeted for.
The Lutron Diva smart dimmer does not require a neutral. That single spec is why a retrofit in a century home in Woodstock or Simcoe is a switch swap rather than a wiring project.
We still open the box and check before promising anything. Box depth, conductor condition, and what the previous owner did in there are all real variables.
Three-way and four-way without opening walls
The classic retrofit headache is a light controlled from two or three places. Traditionally that means traveller wires and hoping the existing wiring makes sense.
With Lutron you can put the smart dimmer at one location and mount a Pico remote on the wall at the others, on a matching wallplate that looks like a switch to anyone who is not looking closely. Up to ten Picos can pair to a single dimmer. No fishing wire through plaster, no chasing travellers.
The Pico can also live somewhere there was never a switch at all. Beside a bed, at the top of the basement stairs, on the wall of a room you added later.
Where it does not fit
Worth saying plainly, because it comes up on site.
The Diva dimmer handles 150 W of dimmable LED or 600 W incandescent and halogen, with a 25 W minimum load. Those are single gang numbers, and they come down when the dimmer shares a box: 600 W incandescent becomes 500 W in a double gang and 400 W in a triple. It is not rated for ELV or MLV loads, so low voltage track, some landscape lighting and certain fixture transformers need a different control. A single very efficient LED bulb on a circuit can also fall under the minimum and misbehave.
Fixture choice matters too. Dimming quality is a function of the driver in the fixture as much as the dimmer on the wall, so if you are buying pot lights for a renovation, choose them before we finalise the control plan rather than after.
Larger homes with keypads, scenes across many rooms and shade integration move up to Lutron's RadioRA 3 platform. That is a design and programming job with a processor rather than a hub, and we scope it differently.
Automation people can actually use
If you run a local hub, the Lutron integration in Home Assistant talks to the bridge locally rather than through the cloud, and it supports the Caséta hub, the PRO bridge, RA2 Select and the RA3 processor. Dimmers, switches, shades, fan control and occupancy sensors all come across, and Pico buttons show up as triggers.
That last part is the useful one. A Pico is a cheap, battery powered, wall mountable button that does not need a neutral, a box or an electrician. It can dim a light, or it can run anything else you have automated. Josh has written about whether running your own hub is worth it over on his site, and the short version is that it depends on who maintains it, not on whether it is clever.
The reason we like this combination is that the lighting keeps working with the hub unplugged. The automation is a layer on top, not a dependency. Plenty of connected products fail that test, which is the point Josh makes about what happens when the vendor's cloud goes away, and it is the same reason we keep smart home control local wherever the gear allows it.
What an install looks like
We walk the house and list every switch location, what it controls, and what is in the box. We check loads and fixture types against the dimmer ratings, confirm which locations become dimmers and which become Picos, and put the hub somewhere with a wired connection rather than behind a TV.
Then we install, name everything sensibly (guests should be able to guess), build the handful of scenes you will really use, and leave you with documentation of what is where. Programming a hundred scenes nobody remembers is not a service, it is a liability.
On cost, the hub is a one time expense and the per location hardware after that is a fraction of it, so the more locations you do at once the better the per switch number gets. Labour depends on access and how many boxes hold surprises. We quote lighting work as a fixed price after the walkthrough, not by the hour, so the number you get is the number you pay.
