Rural internet in Norfolk County: your real options, honestly

We do not sell internet, so we can be straight with you about it. What we do is build the network inside your home or business, and the connection coming in from the road shapes what that network can do. So it is worth knowing your real options out here, because rural Norfolk County is not the dead zone it was a few years ago.

Fibre, where you can get it

The best connection is fibre, and more of the county has it than most people realise. Through the SWIFT rural broadband program, Execulink has run fibre to roughly 4,000 homes and businesses across Norfolk County, including areas that were satellite-only not long ago, out along the Long Point Causeway, Long Point and Old Cut among them. If fibre reaches your road, take it. It is fast in both directions, the latency is low, and there are no data caps to worry about, which matters more than people expect once cameras and cloud backups are in the picture.

The only catch is availability. Fibre follows the build-out, so the honest first step is simply to check your exact address with the provider. If it is there, the rest of this article is academic and you should sign up.

Fixed wireless, the rural middle ground

Where fibre has not reached, fixed wireless is often the next best thing. Execulink and others beam a signal from a local tower to a small antenna on your house. It is not fibre, but a good fixed-wireless link is a real broadband connection with far better latency than old-style satellite, and it is usually the sensible choice for a rural property within sight of a tower. Line of sight matters, so trees and terrain decide whether it works well for you.

For properties that fibre and fixed wireless do not reach, Starlink has genuinely changed rural life. It is low-orbit satellite, which means the latency is low enough for video calls and normal browsing, around 22 milliseconds, nothing like the satellite of a decade ago. Real-world speeds commonly land in the couple-hundred-megabit range, uploads are more modest, and the residential plans are unlimited. You pay for the dish up front and a monthly fee that is higher than fibre, but for a farm at the end of a long lane it is often the difference between working from home and not.

Traditional satellite, the last resort

Older geostationary satellite, such as Xplore's satellite plans, still exists and still has its place as a genuine last resort. Be clear-eyed about it: the latency is very high, often over half a second, which makes video calls and anything interactive painful, and the plans carry data caps. If Starlink is available to you, it is almost always the better satellite choice. Reserve traditional satellite for the addresses where nothing else reaches at all.

What this means for your network

Here is where we come in. The connection type quietly decides what your home network should be built to do.

Latency shapes the experience more than the headline speed. A snappy fibre or Starlink link makes video calls, security-camera viewing and smart-home controls feel instant; a high-latency satellite link makes all of them feel sluggish no matter how fast the download number looks. If you are stuck on high-latency internet, we design around it, keeping as much as possible working locally so your cameras and controls do not depend on a slow round trip to the cloud.

Data caps shape your choices too. If your connection is capped, pointing four cameras at a cloud service will eat the allowance in days. That is exactly why we favour systems that record locally, an approach we get into in telling slow internet from slow Wi-Fi, so your footage lives on a recorder in the house rather than on someone else's meter.

And no connection fixes bad Wi-Fi. Fibre to the house does nothing for the back bedroom or the barn if the network inside is a single consumer router. The connection gets you to the property line; a properly designed network carries it the rest of the way.

The practical order of operations

Check for fibre at your exact address first. If it is there, take it. If not, look at fixed wireless if you have line of sight to a tower, and Starlink if you do not. Keep traditional satellite as the last resort. Then build the network inside to match, recording locally and keeping controls local wherever the connection is slow or capped.
