A lock has one non-negotiable job: work every time. That bar is easy to clear for a $40 deadbolt and surprisingly easy to fail for a $300 smart one, because many smart locks quietly depend on your internet connection and someone else's servers to do things you'd assume happen at the door.
The good news is that well-chosen smart locks are genuinely reliable, outage or not. The difference is in how they connect.
Two kinds of smart lock
Most smart locks sold today fall into one of two camps.
Wi-Fi locks connect straight to your router and from there to the manufacturer's cloud. The app talks to the cloud, the cloud talks to the lock. It's the simplest to set up, which is why it dominates the shelf at the hardware store.
Locally controlled locks use Zigbee, Z-Wave, Thread or Bluetooth, usually paired with a hub in your house. The app talks to the hub, and the hub talks to the lock, all inside your own walls. The internet is only involved when you're away from home and want to reach in remotely.
That architectural difference seems academic until the internet goes out, or the vendor's cloud has a bad afternoon, or the vendor gets bought and sunsets the service. All three happen.
What still works when the internet is down
Worth being precise here, because the failure is partial, not total, and the marketing tends to blur it.
Any decent smart lock, both kinds, still opens with its keypad code or physical key during an outage. The motor and the codes live in the lock. Nobody is locked out of their house because the modem died. If a lock can't do this, it isn't a lock.
What a cloud-dependent Wi-Fi lock loses during an outage: app control from your couch, new code creation, unlock notifications, and any automations. The lock becomes a keypad deadbolt until service returns. During a longer outage, that can mean days of not knowing whether the kids locked up, and no way to issue a code to the neighbour feeding the cat.
What a locally controlled lock loses: only the remote part. Inside the house, the hub still runs. The app still works on your home network, automations still fire, the door still locks itself at night, and the "door left unlocked" alert still reaches the tablet on the wall. In a rural area with less-than-heroic internet, and much of our service area qualifies, this is the difference that decides the purchase.
Late winter is a good time to think about this. Freezing rain and wet snow take out power and internet in our part of Ontario every year, and a lock is exactly the device you don't want joining the outage.
Choosing: hub-based unless you have a reason not to
Our default recommendation is a Zigbee, Z-Wave or Thread lock paired with a hub, integrated into whatever runs the rest of the smart home. You get remote access when the internet is up, full function at home when it isn't, and independence from any single vendor's cloud decisions. Battery life is also markedly better, because these radios sip power where Wi-Fi gulps it.
A Wi-Fi lock is a reasonable choice in one situation: you want exactly one smart device, no hub, and you mainly care about remote unlocking for deliveries or guests while accepting cloud dependence. Go in with open eyes and check whether the lock's core features survive without the subscription.
Bluetooth-only locks sit in between: fully local, no cloud, but no remote access either unless you add a bridge, at which point you've built a hub with extra steps.
Battery habits that keep it boring
Smart lock horror stories are mostly battery stories. A few habits make them a non-issue:
Change batteries on a schedule, not on warnings. Twice a year, when the clocks change, is the tradition for smoke alarms and works just as well here. Most locks run 6 to 12 months; scheduled replacement means you never test the lower bound in January.
Use quality alkaline batteries unless the manufacturer says otherwise. Standard rechargeables run at lower voltage and can trigger low-battery behaviour early, and some lithium cells report charge poorly, so the lock dies without ever having warned you.
Take the low-battery alert seriously the day it appears. A locally integrated lock can flash a light or notify the house; a cloud lock's warning may be an email that lands in promotions.
And know the fallback: keep the physical key somewhere that isn't inside the house, and if the keypad has an emergency 9-volt contact at the bottom, remember it exists.
A lock that's chosen and set up this way is the most boring device in the house, which is exactly the goal.
