In UniFi Protect each camera can record at full detail or a lighter setting. Maximum is sharpest evidence and most storage; Balanced is what most homes and shops run.
Continuous keeps everything. Motion plus smart detections keeps far less, and is what most sites actually use.
RAID mirrors footage across drives so one drive failing does not lose evidence. It roughly doubles the drives needed.
How we plan coverage
Cameras are chosen by the job, not by the box. A long driveway wants a bullet with reach; a doorway where you need faces wants a camera at head height; a wide yard is one 180-degree camera instead of two; licence plates need a dedicated, tightly-angled camera, never a general one.
Coverage is planned so a person is always in some frame as they move: entries overlap, choke points are covered twice, and there is no blind spot directly beneath or behind a camera. We also point a camera at the recorder and the camera locations themselves, so the system cannot be quietly defeated.
What we confirm on site
- Exact aiming, mounting height and lens angle for every camera.
- Night-time infrared reach and glare, and lighting that helps or hurts.
- Occlusion: trees, posts, signage and parked vehicles that block a view.
- Whether one camera can do what two are doing on paper, or the reverse.
- Cable routes, power and where the recorder lives.

Camera counts and placement guidance are starting points based on what you tell us; the right number and exact positions are confirmed by a site visit, because sightlines, mounting height, lighting and obstructions decide real coverage. Storage is an estimate: it assumes H.265 recording at typical bitrates for the quality, recording mode and retention you chose, and real footage size varies with scene activity, motion and light. UniFi Protect's own calculator gives the exact figure once the cameras and settings are set. Every job, hardware and labour, is quoted in writing at current Canadian prices before work starts.
