UniFi Network 10.5 shipped in late July and 10.6 followed on August 20. Most release notes are a wall of bullet points; these two are worth reading because the theme is unusual for networking software. Almost everything added is about making changes safer: rolling back automatically when a change cuts you off, spotting a device that is quietly misbehaving, and seeing what the network was doing at 3 a.m. when you were not looking.
Here is our read, from the point of view of a small business or a well-equipped house, and what we are doing about it on networks we manage.
Test & Confirm: the change that rolls itself back
The headline feature. When you change a setting that could lock you out (a VLAN, a firewall rule, and as of 10.6 a VPN or management-network change), UniFi applies it provisionally and waits for you to confirm the device is still reachable. If you do not confirm within the window, it reverts on its own.
Anyone who has ever changed a management VLAN on a remote switch and then driven across town to fix it will understand why this matters. For our clients it means remote changes on UniFi Care are lower risk, and it means the "do not touch the network on a Friday" rule can relax a little.
We are turning it on everywhere. There is no downside.
Safe Ops: Auto STP Edge and link debounce
Two small features under the Safe Ops banner that fix real-world annoyances.
Auto STP Edge marks ports connected to end devices (PCs, printers, cameras) as edge ports automatically, so they come up instantly instead of waiting through spanning-tree negotiation. The symptom this fixes is "the card terminal takes thirty seconds to get online after the cleaner unplugs it."
Link debounce stops a port that is flapping (a marginal cable, a device rebooting, a PoE camera browning out) from repeatedly tearing down and rebuilding the link and spamming the log. It needs recent switch firmware (USW 7.5.4 or later), which is another argument for keeping firmware current on a plan.
Device Supervisor and auto-recovery
10.5 added global controls for automatically recovering devices that stop responding: power-cycling a PoE port that has a hung camera on it, for example, without a human noticing first. 10.6 adds a filter for "flapping" devices so the ones that keep dropping stand out in the list.
This is the part that quietly replaces a support ticket. A camera that locks up once a month used to mean a call and a visit; now it means a log entry.
Time Machine for ports and radios
Port Manager gained a 24-hour history per port in 10.5; 10.6 extends it to every port and adds the same for Wi-Fi radios. You can scroll back and see utilisation, errors, client counts and events for the last day.
Why it matters: the question is always "what happened at 2:40 when the Wi-Fi dropped?", and until now the honest answer was "we do not know, it is fine now". Now there is a graph. For our side it shortens the diagnosis of intermittent faults, which are the expensive kind.
Client observability
Per-client timelines that correlate connectivity, roaming between access points, application usage and overall network health over 24 hours. This is the tool for "my laptop keeps dropping in the boardroom": you can see it roam, see the signal, and see whether it was the laptop or the access point.
Nightly channel optimisation
10.6 adds a scheduled, AI-driven Wi-Fi channel optimisation that runs overnight and can be limited to selected radios. Channel interference from neighbours changes over time; this re-tunes without you thinking about it. We enable it on residential and small-office sites and exclude radios that serve devices that dislike channel changes (some older IoT gear).
Blueprint, Drift Inspector and Topology Spotlight
These are multi-site tools in Site Manager. Blueprints are configuration templates; Drift Inspector flags when a site has wandered away from its template; Topology Spotlight highlights selected devices in a big network map. Useful for us managing many client sites. If you have one building, you can ignore all three.
What we are doing on UniFi Care networks
- Enabling Test & Confirm on every site.
- Turning on Auto STP Edge and link debounce, after updating switch firmware.
- Enabling auto-recovery for PoE cameras and access points.
- Enabling nightly channel optimisation on sites without sensitive IoT radios.
- Applying the update in our normal maintenance window, after a configuration backup.
Should you update yourself?
If your gateway is on 10.4 or later and you are not running anything exotic, 10.6 has been stable in our testing. Take a backup first (Settings → System → Backups), update the Network application, then let devices update in order. If you are several versions behind, update in steps rather than jumping, and do it when nobody needs the network for an hour.
