Thunderstorm season: surge protection for your gear

A layered approach to protecting network gear from summer storms: panel protection, UPS units, PoE considerations, and what a UPS really buys you.

June opens thunderstorm season in southern Ontario, and every summer we replace gear that a storm took out: routers with dead WAN ports, switches that never woke up, the odd recorder with a scrambled drive. Some of it is bad luck. A lot of it was preventable for less than the cost of the replacement.

Surge protection works best as layers, not as one magic power bar. Here is how the layers stack up.

Layer one: protection at the panel

A whole-home surge protective device installs at your electrical panel and clamps large surges before they enter the house wiring, whether they arrive from the grid or from a nearby strike. Since it protects every circuit at once, it covers the furnace, the appliances, and yes, the network closet, all in one shot.

This is electrician work, typically a few hundred dollars installed, and it is the single best value in the whole stack. Newer homes increasingly have one from construction; plenty of older homes in our area do not, and it is worth checking your panel or asking your electrician.

One honest note: nothing at any layer is rated for a direct lightning strike on the building. Layers are about the common case, which is nearby strikes and grid switching surges. For those, panel protection does heavy lifting.

Layer two: point-of-use protection and the UPS

At the equipment itself, the familiar surge bar clamps what the panel level lets through. Two things matter: a real protection rating (joules, and a status light that tells you the protection is still alive), and age. Surge components wear out silently with every hit. A ten-year-old power bar is often just an extension cord with delusions. After a serious storm event, replace them; they are consumables.

Better still, for the network closet, is a UPS (uninterruptible power supply) with surge protection built in, which brings us to what a UPS actually buys you, because it is widely misunderstood.

What a UPS actually buys you

People imagine a UPS is about riding out outages. With network gear, mostly it is not. A modest UPS might run your router, switch and recorder for 15 to 60 minutes, which will not cover a real outage.

What it actually buys you:

  • Immunity to blinks. Most storm-season power events are sags and one-second flickers, and each one is an unplanned hard reboot for everything downstream. A UPS makes them invisible. Your Wi-Fi does not drop, the recorder does not interrupt its timeline, and nothing corrupts a filesystem mid-write.
  • Conditioned power. Line-interactive units smooth the sags and swells that stress power supplies over time. Gear on clean power simply lasts longer.
  • A graceful ending. When an outage is real, the battery window lets recorders and NAS units shut down properly instead of dropping dead mid-write. Scrambled recorder drives usually die at the moment power fails, not during the outage itself.

For a typical home network closet, a suitable UPS runs $150 to $350. Compare that with re-buying a router and explaining to the household why the internet is down for a week.

The PoE angle: one UPS protects many devices

If your cameras and access points are powered over Ethernet, you have a quiet advantage: their power all originates at the PoE switch. Put that switch on the UPS and behind good surge protection, and every camera and access point inherits the same clean, battery-backed feed. One protected circuit, a dozen protected devices, and your cameras keep recording through every flicker.

The flip side deserves respect: cables that leave the building, like the run to a detached garage or an eave-mounted camera, can carry surges inward. Outdoor runs should use appropriate cable and grounded Ethernet surge protectors where they enter the building, and between separate buildings, fibre is the gold standard because glass conducts nothing. Do not forget the other copper into the house either. A coax or DSL line can deliver a surge straight into your modem's most expensive port, so protect or ground those entries too.

A one-evening audit

Before the next big cell rolls through: check the panel for a surge device, check the age and status lights on your power bars, get the network closet onto a UPS, and look at where outdoor cables enter the building. An hour of checking, a modest spend, and storm season becomes weather instead of risk.
