Almost every house has one: the far room. The bedroom over the garage, the basement office, the den at the opposite corner from the router. Wi-Fi limps in at one bar, video calls stutter, and someone in the household has declared the room cursed.
Before you fix the far room, make sure the room is actually the problem. We wrote about telling slow internet apart from slow Wi-Fi, and it is worth the five-minute test, because no adapter fixes an overloaded internet plan.
If the connection really does die between the router and that room, you have three realistic options. Here they are, ranked honestly.
Third place: powerline adapters
Powerline adapters send data over your electrical wiring. Plug one in near the router, one in the far room, and in theory the house's copper does the rest.
The theory is the problem. Powerline performance varies wildly from house to house, and even from outlet to outlet in the same house. Old wiring, circuits on opposite legs of the panel, arc-fault breakers, and electrical noise from appliances all take a toll. A kit rated for a gigabit might deliver 300 Mbps in one home and 40 in the next, and the only way to find out is to buy one and try. Speeds can also sag when the furnace or a phone charger starts making noise on the line.
That said, powerline is cheap (typically $60 to $120 for a pair), renter-friendly, and takes five minutes to try. When it works, it is a fine fix for a printer or a TV. Just treat the rating on the box as fiction and keep the receipt.
Second place, and the sleeper pick: MoCA over old coax
Here is the option almost nobody knows about. If your house was wired for cable TV at some point, there is a decent chance a coax outlet is sitting unused in the far room. MoCA adapters turn that old coax into a fast, stable network link.
Unlike powerline, MoCA runs over shielded cable that was designed to carry radio-frequency signals. Modern adapters deliver near-gigabit real-world speeds with low, consistent latency, and they hold those speeds. For a home office or a serious gaming setup, MoCA behaves almost exactly like Ethernet.
The catches are modest. You need coax at both ends and the runs must actually connect (old splitters in a wall plate or attic sometimes need replacing with MoCA-rated ones, and a filter at the point of entry is good practice). A pair of adapters runs roughly $150 to $250. If you are on cable internet, the same coax can usually carry both without drama.
We have rescued a lot of far rooms with two MoCA adapters and ten minutes in a basement. If the coax exists, try this before anything else.
First place: a proper cable
No surprise here. A real Ethernet run from your router or switch to the far room is the endgame. Full speed, no adapters, no variance, no troubleshooting, and it will still be working when every gadget in this article is landfill. A cable in the wall also gives you somewhere to hang a wired access point later, which fixes the room's Wi-Fi for phones too, not just the one desk.
The reason people avoid it is obvious: fishing cable through a finished house is work. Basements and attics are your friends, one well-planned run is often enough, and the materials are cheap; the labour is the cost. If you are opening walls for any other reason this year, put cable in while they are open.

The honest summary
Try in this order: check whether the problem is really the room, then look for coax and try MoCA, then consider powerline if you need a cheap experiment, and know that a proper cable ends the discussion permanently.
