Night vision explained: IR, colour and marketing

IR range claims, colour night vision, and spotlight cameras explained plainly, and why camera placement matters more than any spec sheet.

Camera boxes love night vision claims. "Sees 30 metres in total darkness." "Full colour at night." The footage owners actually pull up after an incident often tells a different story: a washed-out face right in front of the lens, a licence plate that is just a white smear, a grainy grey nothing past the driveway. Night vision is real and useful, but the specs are written by marketing departments. Here is what the terms actually mean.

How infrared night vision really works

Almost every security camera does night vision the same way: when it gets dark, the camera switches to black and white and turns on a ring of infrared LEDs. Your eyes can't see IR light, but the sensor can, so the camera is effectively carrying its own invisible floodlight.

That "30 metre IR range" number means the LEDs throw enough IR to register something at that distance. It does not mean you can identify a person at 30 metres. Illumination falls off hard with distance, so a figure at the edge of the stated range shows up as a vague bright shape, not a face. As a working rule, expect usable identification at maybe a third to half of the advertised IR range, and treat everything beyond that as motion detection, not evidence.

IR has quirks worth knowing. Objects close to the lens get overexposed, which is why a visitor at your door can be a glowing white blob. Rain, snow, and spiderwebs right in front of the camera reflect IR straight back and can trigger motion events all night. And a camera pointed through a window will mostly photograph its own IR reflection in the glass.

Colour at night needs light to work with

"Colour night vision" is not magic. It is a very sensitive sensor plus a wide aperture, and it needs some ambient light: a porch light, a streetlight, landscape lighting. Give it that and you get colour footage that is genuinely more useful, because clothing colour and vehicle colour survive.

In true darkness, a rural yard with no lighting at all, those same cameras quietly fall back to IR black and white, or produce colour footage so noisy and blurry it is worse than the IR would have been. Long exposure times are the hidden cost: the image looks bright, but anything moving turns to smear.

Our honest advice is that a modest dusk-to-dawn light near the camera does more for image quality than paying extra for the most sensitive sensor on the market.

Spotlight cameras: floodlight included

Spotlight cameras split the difference. They run IR by default, then fire a visible white light when they detect motion, switching to full colour while the light is on. You get colour evidence of whatever triggered the event, plus a deterrent effect, since being lit up tells a person they have been noticed.

The trade-offs are practical. A light blasting on at every raccoon gets old for you and your neighbours, so the motion zones need tuning. And the light announces the camera's location, which you may or may not want. We tend to like spotlight models at driveways and back entrances, and plain IR cameras for wider coverage.

Placement beats specs every time

Here is the part the spec sheet never mentions: most bad night footage is a placement problem, not a camera problem.

A camera mounted under the eaves at six metres up sees the top of everyone's head, day or night. A camera aimed at a distance a human never actually walks through will never deliver a face. A camera pointed toward the road at night mostly collects headlight flare. Meanwhile a mid-range camera mounted at the right height, covering a choke point like a door, gate, or driveway pinch at close range, will produce identification-quality footage with unremarkable specs.

Mounting height, distance to the choke point, and avoiding backlight matter more than any number on the box. So before you shop by IR range, walk your property at night. Note where the light already is, where people must pass, and what you would actually need to see.
